p H a c t :
"I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..."
- Johnny Cash: Highwayman++

Silmu, Ura Records / Pacific-Atlantic Records, Helsinki, Finland
Favourite pieces (October 2003):
1. ALKUPERÄINEN: Maski (Rikos Records 7")
The first Finnish Trip Hop Recording? Not in the vein of the coffee shop e-z listening but true paranoia backed with piledriver beats.
2. NINA HAGEN: New York, N.Y. (Album: Angstlos)
Those 80's, those 80's... Yes, I'm on the verge of becoming a genuine old fart big time any day now. Anyway, this out-there tech-pop aria applauds the busy nightlife of the Big Apple at a time when New Wave finally crashed on the hard rocks of the dawning yuppie era. Nice.
3. BECK: Asshole (Album: One Foot In the Grave)
I've never really "got" Beck's so called hit albums apart from some individual songs. Instead I've appreciated more the "non-commercial" ones like this, Mutations and Sea Change. They may not be funky fun, filled with amusing sonic tricks or sampladelic trainspotting. They just happen to have some of the most heartfelt and touching music I've heard.
4. THOMAS DOLBY: Cruel (Album: Astronauts and Heretics)
A master of sci-fi tinged, science-scented adventures and nerdy heartbreak, Dolby is loved by ex-bookworm teens accross the globe. His albums, apart from the Golden Age Of The Wireless, are uneven, each one still containing at least one great song. This one's off his last solo album, otherwise ruined by L.A. hair guitar pomp.
5. GENESIS: The Lamia (Album: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway)
Being the last record featuring Peter Gabriel, LLDOB is hailed by many the greatest Genesis album ever. And yes, it contains all the loved (and abhorred) prog elements: classical influences, mystical stories, soaring mellotron choirs, portamento moog leads and guitar with quite a few extra strings. In this song the albums protagonist, Rael, is consumed by Lamia, a snakelike creature with three beautiful female faces. Who could possibly not relate to that?
6. MOUSE ON MARS: Actionist Bespoke (Album: Idiology)
Noisy twitching dancing fit featuring malfunctioning brat voice on vocals. Brings about nervousness accompanied by wide grins and wild, spastic feet.
7. BLUR: Coffee and TV (Album: 13)
Good old pop-rock like this goes down well after long adventures on the verge of the known sonic universe. Boy, does that Graham Coxon lad have a sympathetic singing voice or what?
8. URIAH HEEP: Bird Of Prey (Album: Best Of)
Anyone can tell that I'm an occasional fan of falsettos. This song is just perfect for the practical joke of starting any sleepyhead's day with some blaring musical kicks. Check also: the harmonic parts and how the lead vocalist's energy diminishes little by little as the song progresses.
9. ELLIOTT SMITH: Everything Reminds Me Of Her (Album: Figure 8)
Post-relationship melancholy flashback illustrated in bold strokes.
10. SILMU: Bright Bulb (Early Release ep)
Not afraid of honking Pacific's own horn now and then, I'd like to point out how the post-rave chords, sine basses and cricket rhythms interweave into more than a feeling on this track off Silmu's new ep.
